From what i been reading it's all dubstep, dancehall, & cuts from the Major Lazer release. Should be sick!
Check this interview with Diplo from seen-site.com - pretty cool piece with seen & diplo discussing the ways that jamaican, american, and european dancehall are influencing one another. Get lerned!
Montreal's Ghislain Poirier hits the Modern tomorrow night with Ninja Tune label-mate Daedelus. Big, dirty bass! Poirier might be best-known for that tune Blazin he did with Face-T, which was a big tune. killer. he's hot up on the soca jams now, i hear & you can be sure there'll be filthy bass riddims galore. heaven.
Caught him last year at a brutally under-promoted event but you can be sure this friday at the modern'll kill it. no fuck ups on promos this time, for real!
this's a bit of an older mix, sometime last fall i think, but it's nice. check it out.
Juan MacLean's here at Richards tonight, on tour for their new album, The Future Will Come. Their live set is supposed to be fantastic, don't miss out!
I got a little something for everyone (including myself) who didn't get tickets to last night's Peaches show at the Commodore... Peaches & The Drums of Death put together a bit of a Piracy Funds Terrorism-style mixtape a couple months back. If you didn't get to see the show, this is probably as good as it gets until she comes back, whenever that might be...
Yup, its true. It's an early set but it'll be a good one.
i been getting into this old RobotKiss mix I found kickin around the back of a hard drive somewhere - a nice, chill sound for the warm-up set. Goes well with those eerie globes in the pic they used for the event, too. Little rough around the edges, i know, but it's old & i just stumbled onto it...
The Creative boys've also got Kori K, Captain Eric, Mystery Korn Flakes, & Steve the Creative Individual dropping sets. Beautiful venue, great crowd - should be a killer night!
Well, that's it for now, i got real work to do. Check the mix below, & see you at Saturday Soundsations...
$10-$20 sliding scale at the door & all (as in %100) of the profits go to the BC Cancer foundation. For more info on the BC Ride for Cancer, or to make a donation, visit our home page.
Montreal's Mole drops a live set at the Lotus this weekend, part of the MUTEK_10 Tour that's prepping North America for MUTEK_10 as part of thi year's 10th anniversary of the Montreal MUTEK festival. The New Forms Media Society (remember breakforms & the bug???) have teamed up with intimate productions (who do Saturday's SiGNAL nights at the Lotus) to bring this tour to Vancouver.
MUTEK_10 runs from May 27-31 in Montreal, if you get the chance to go you should definitely take it - MUTEK draws killer electronic acts from all over the place (plus it's in Montreal in the spring, yeah?!?!?).
In the meantime, get down to the Lotus this Sat & get a taste with the Mole...
Cowtown's most famous dj-duo are at Shine tonight, tearin it up & hopefully turning the place into a sweatbox. You can check out some of their tracks on their myspace page but their dj sets are where it's really at. I snagged the mix below from Discobelle a couple of months back so it'sa bit older but check it & you'll see what i mean...
keepin (kinda) on the electro ghettoblaster theme, today's the global release of the director's cut of Kingstonlogic2.0 - extra-nice jamaican electro from Kingston's own Terry Lynn. Go to Terry Lynn's site to check out some more of her beats & some great photographs courtesy of The Afflicted Yard if you wanna learn more (& you should wanna...).
I can't speak for authenticity, but Lynn's got these dirty electro tracks that seem to speak more to the daily Kingston grind than partying & sex - which, i dunno, maybe it's just me but that's kind of a nice break sometimes, yeah???
Last night of Midforms tonite!!! Soul of Man, Myagi, Neighbor, Precise & Kraig, & hosted by MC Think Tank. The night's've been great so far so if you haven't checked it out yet now's your last chance!!! lot's more info on all the acts at clubzone
& in the spirit of all things hip hop & break check out this ghetto blaster...
I know that looks like a CD in this pic, but it's a turntable (believe me, i checked...)
A couple more from the boombox setup... yup, that one's got a keyboard on it... (didn't make any noise tho...) mr_
New Form Festival's doing Midforms09 this weekend - Mar5-7 at the Great Northern Way Campus (the one UBC, SFU, & Emily Carr share). 3 nights, 3 themes: Mosaic Sounds, TechForms, & Breaksform plus loads of new media art & exhibits like cos&fx's Visual Soundscape Lounge, James Phillips' Social History of the Ghetto Blaster (below):
or this wild collection of dozens of tiny, servo-controlled mirrors from Heliomatrix (just a taster, the full exhibit should be much more involved...):
Exhibits are free from 1pm-4pm on Fri & Sat. More info here.
dj sets & shows run from 9pm on every night. tix at beatstreet, zulu, highlife, & clubzone
Biltmore's got Thunderheist & Cadence Weapon tonite as part of VANOC's pre-2010 media promos. Can-con, electro, & hip hop - & probably a shitload of pro-2010 hype, yeah? Everything's got a price...
Thunderheist's that t-dot, mtl mashup I posted up on back here (that fucked-up rooster eye, remember???) & Cadence's out from edmonton (seriously) with a pay-what-you-can mixtape of originals & remixes.
It's an early show tho (8:30) i guess cause it's gotta be relatively family friendly for the olympic promos??? shitty...
Alright, it hasn't exactly been rainy (& it's definitely not Monday) but this week's been pretty much shite since... well... Monday (ohhhh... i get it now...)
anyways, not much mixin here - just some rainy day reggae tracks. but they somehow always make me feel nice...
Messenjah - Rock you High Dennis Brown - Blood, Sweat & Tears Black Uhuru - Sponji Reggae Black Uhuru - Happiness Glen Brown & King Tubby - Wicked Tumbling Dub Sly Dunbar - Unmetered Taxi Lady G - Nuff Respect Mikey General - Tell it like it is Theivery Corporation - Originality Morgan Heritage - Black Man's Paradise Military Man- Concrete Castle Jah Cure - Cease All War Steel Pulse - Roller Skates Junior Reid - Boom Shak-a-lak Admiral Tibet - Have the Strength Turbulence - Notorius Mr. Vegas - Worry Valentina & Tanya Stephens - It's a Guilt Trip (heatwave refix)
Nick Catchdubs tonite at Shine - co-founder (alongside can-con favorite, A-Track) of Fool's Gold records. His sets are supposed to be an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kind of affair, so if you're down with the mashups this should be the set for you!
You can grab mix he did for The FADER Magazine, where he's been working for the last couple years, from the link below:
I got so excited I had to slap together a mix of DFA tracks. But, as usual, it ended up taking on a mind of it's own and didn't have as many tracks from DFA as I expected. Bunch of NYC(ish) dance tunes tho...
But what are you complaining about, it's free music, yeah?
